Bird Watching in Negombo

Bird watching in Negombo is a wonderful nature experience and Negombo Bird watching takes place in the Muthurajawella wetland. Negombo Bird watching tour will operate by motor boat and Negombo bird watching is the best birding tour around the Colombo and sub-urban. 

Negombo Bird watching, taking place in Negombo Lagoon by boat and Muthurajawela Birds Sanctuary located 12 km away from Negombo city, closer to the Airport. Literally Muthurajawella means produce rice as beautiful as pearls for the King of Kotte. The Muthurajawela Paddy fields made uncultivable, allegedly by the seepage of sea water through Dutch Canals, left to death and decay.

Spread over 6230 hectares, The Muthurajawela wetland runs parallel to the western coastline of the country and, together with the contiguous Negombo lagoon, forms an integrated coastal wetland system of high biodiversity and ecological significance.

Nearly 200 species of flora belonging to seven major types, namely marsh, lactic flora, shrub land, reed, swamp, grasslands, stream bank and mangrove forest in Muthurajawela Wetland zone including one endemic species, Aceraceae or Phoenix zelanica. 

The vertebrate fauna at Muthurajawela includes 40 species of fish, 14 species of reptiles, 102 species of birds and 22 species of mammals. Among the total number of vertebrate species documented, 17 are endemic, while 26 are nationally in danger. Among the invertebrates documented, 48 species are butterflies and 22 species are dragonflies.

    Yes! we do not add any other customer with your fishing tour because of the present health and safety issues

    It is an early morning tour (7.30 a.m.) highly recommended and possibility of spot endemic and many bird species than day time

    Evening bird sightings are poor comparatively to morning bird watching tour because of the temperature and foods availability.

    You cannot do walking in the Muthurajawella wetland because there are many small islands less than 10 square meters. therefore bird watching tour takes place by motor boat.

    Engine capacity 8 H. p and noisy is very less, and it is minimum disturbing for birds and other animals. Birds used to hear noisy frequently by fishery motor boats and animals used to bear the noisy

    If you could not do fishing because of wind or raining weather and if your complaint before you sail then we will cancel the operation and money fully refunded. But once you sail and if your complaint, then we cannot refund the money because we already incurred cost for the particular operation, therefore, we cannot refund. 

    So please ensure keep complaints before you sail and check the weather before you sail. It does not matter even last minute if you cancel the tour and cost can be refunded.

    No! we do not operate the bird watching during the raining time because you cannot get right sightings

    We will sail with our valued customers only in perfect weather and all boats are tests before the sailing. So, possibility of such an incident is very rare.

    So far, we never come across such terrible experience 😊 but sudden engine trouble can happen and in case such issue our boatman can fix it in few minutes and in case if he could not fix, we will transfer you to an alternative boat. 

    We will provide life jackets and our fishing guides are excellent swimmers and they have worked with fishing for over 20 years on a particular coast. So, they can manage any kind of emergency.
