Overview
Colombo is port is another historically significant harbour in Sri Lanka and Colombo port functioning as trading port since 8th C. but Colombo port movements increased in 14th C because of Portuguese arrivals to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka marine journals reveal over 45 wrecks in bottom of the Colombo port ocean, but because of securities factors, we cannot do dive nearby the Colombo port wrecks. Follow wrecks diving we are conducting since 2002.
It does not limit Colombo diving to wrecks. Wide angle enthusiasts can explore current swept outer reefs with gardens of gorgonian fans, while macro photographers can search for many nudibranchs, crabs, shrimps, pipefish and other creatures on the rocky reefs.
There is nothing like the sense of awe when a shipwreck rises out of the water in front of you; the thrill of discovering a jewel like nudibranch on an otherwise bare rock or adrenaline rush of hunting tuna flashing past you… to see it privileged what few to see and to discover more of the underwater world and its wonders.
Pecheur Breton (Cargo wreck)–Colombo.
An intact cargo ship that sank in 1994 and now resting on its port side at 32m with its starboard side at 18m, and easily penetration into the cargo holds. The Wreck is covered in colorful hard and soft coral.
Schools of fusiliers congregate above the Wreck, which attracts predators such as dogtooth tuna.
Medhafaru, Colombo
A Maldivian freighter that sank in 2009 and sitting upright at a depth of 29m. The top of the ship reaches 14m and attracts a large number of schooling fish. This is an easy wreck to explore and the large front loader on the main deck is favourite among drivers.
SS Perseus, Colombo
A large British steamer that sank after hitting German sea mine in 1917 during the WWI. It broke the ship up but covers a large area warranting several dives. It is covered in coral and teems with fish life.
Gorgonian Garden, Colombo
A flat rubble bed 35m with a dense garden of large gorgonian sea fans, some of reaching over 2m across. A wide-angel photographer’s delight with excellent photo opportunities. Because of the depth and often strong current, this is suitable only for experienced drivers.
