August is the month of festival time in Sri Lanka… there are many colourful and religious festival taking place in August. Some of people call August is the cultural month of the Year.
The Sacred tooth, which is the Buddha’s left canine was brought here during the reign of King Kithsiri Megavanna by Prince Dantha and Princess Hemamala from the Kingdom of Kalinga,India. Since then it was preciously protected and guarded inside a special shrine in the royal palace and honoured as the palladium of kings.The processor of the relic, it was believed had the right to rule the country.
The esala perahera, held in the hill capital of Kandy, is one of the most magnificent spectacles in Asia. It traces its roots to King Kithsiri Megavanna-the centerpiece of the festival and symbol of the country’s sovereignty. But its present form was inaugurated by the 18th century Kandyan King Kith Siri Rajasinghe.The Festival commences with nightly processions over 10 days and culminates in a day procession on the eleventh. Hundreds of costumed dances, drummers, musicians, torch bearers ,whipcrackers,acrobats and other participants parade along the streets, while colorfully caparisoned elephants pace majestically past.
Kandy Esela Perahera is the most magnificent of these festivals in Sri Lanka. A spectacular medieval day pageant is held for 10 nights with Kandyan dancers and Drummers in colourful traditional costumes. Kandyan Chieftains in medieval court dress, more than one hundred caparisoned elephants whip crackers, torch bearers etc. it is an unforgettable experience. Sri Lanka’s deep-rooted and ancient civilization has endowed the island with legacy of colourful national and religious festival. Hardly a month goes by without a unique national a genius for pageantry and ceremony.
Angampora - The native fighting art of Sinhalese warriors

Dating back to the legendary kings of Mahasammatha and Ravana and developed over centuries, Angampora, a secretively practiced from of martial art has been in the forefront of protecting Sri Lanka from neighboring invaders. The invincible might of Angampora was so feared that the British banned it in 1817 after gaining full control of the island.
Angampora in the native Sinhala language means unarmed combat. It’s a unique fighting art that brings together , combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, music and meditation. At its core is ‘Angam’ meaning hand to hand fighting. ‘illangam’ denotes the use of indigenous weapons such as the Velayudaya, staves, knives and swords. The deadliest feature of this ancient fighting art is the use of pressure point attacks which inflict pain and possible paralysis of the opponent.
